Today I am going to answer the eighth question in this series: “Which of the Deathly Hallows would you choose?”
8. Which of the Deathly Hallows would you choose?
For those of you who don’t know, the Deathly Hallows are three magical artifacts, gifted long ago to a set of wizard brothers by Death.
- Elder Wand – ownership of the wand makes you unbeatable
- Resurrection Stone – allows you to summon spirits from beyond the grave
- Invisibility Cloak – makes the user completely invisible

I would easily select the cloak. I do not seek power, nor contact with the dead, but I do experience social anxiety, which can be difficult at times. Invisibility might make me more bold!
Harry, Hermione, and Ron learn about the Deathly Hallows in Chapter 21, “The Tale of the Three Brothers”, in the final book of the series. After hearing the story, the trio discusses the likelihood that the objects exist:
“‘I think you’re right,’ she told him. ‘It’s just a morality tale, it’s obvious which gift is best, which one you’d choose -‘
The three of them spoke at the same time; Hermione said, ‘the Cloak,’ Ron said, ‘the wand,’ and Harry said, ‘the stone.’
They looked at each other, half surprised, half amused.
‘You’re supposed to say the Cloak,’ Ron told Hermione, ‘but you wouldn’t need to be invisible if you had the wand. An unbeatable wand, Hermione, come on!’
‘We’ve already got an Invisibility Cloak,’ said Harry.
‘And it’s helped us rather a lot, in case you hadn’t noticed!’ said Hermione. ‘Whereas the wand would be bound to attract trouble -‘
‘Only if you shouted about it,’ argued Ron. ‘Only if you were prat enough to go dancing around, waving it over your head, and singing, “I’ve got an unbeatable wand, come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.” As long as you kept your trap shut -‘
‘Yes, but could you keep your trap shut?’ said Hermione, looking skeptical.”
It turns out that Harry’s invisibility cloak that he inherited from his father during his first year at Hogwarts is the original Cloak, Voldemort’s ring horcrux contained the Resurrection Stone, and Dumbledore possessed the Elder Wand.
When Draco disarms Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Draco technically becomes master of the Elder Wand without killing the previous owner or actually physically obtaining the object. Harry becomes its new master when he wrestles Draco’s own wand away from him at Malfoy Manor.
After Dumbledore destroyed the ring horcrux, he left the stone to Harry. Thus, Harry, at one point in time, possessed all three of the Deathly Hallows, making him “master of death” when he sacrifices himself to Voldemort.
While all three objects are what make one “master of death”, I think the cloak was most useful in the series and would be most useful in reality as well.
Which object would you choose?
