Early in March we visited Washington state for the first time! Greg had to go there for work and I was lucky to be able to come along. We were there Thursday to Sunday, and we had a free day on Saturday that we used to visit Mount Rainier National Park!

We love visiting National Parks and we are so fortunate to have Shenandoah National Park right in our backyard! Last year for our anniversary trip, we visited the nearby New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia. Looking at a map, I discovered that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is only 5.5 hours away from us! That may seem far to some people, but we don’t mind a road trip. So this year for our wedding anniversary (5 years!), I planned a backpacking and camping trip to the Smokies. Time to add another stamp to our national park passport!

When we got engaged at Grand Canyon National Park, our hiking friends suggested we buy a National Parks passport to collect stamps at more parks on our journey through life together. Since we live in Virginia, we’ve been to Shenandoah National Park many times – it’s so nice to have it just down the road from us! In 2020, the New River Gorge in West Virginia became a national park so we made a plan to travel there for our anniversary!

Our original plan for our anniversary weekend was to travel to West Virginia and visit New River Gorge National Park. However, two weeks prior to our trip, Greg sprained his ankle playing basketball! So we changed our Airbnb reservation to October to give his ankle time to heal.
