Happy 1st Birthday, Finnegan! | Kitty Update

It was Finnegan’s 1st birthday yesterday!  We chose October 1st for his birthday and August 1st for Felix’s birthday since we didn’t know their actually birthdays.

I thought I would use his birthday as an excuse to post an update!  We have had them for about 8 months now and we love them so much!  It’s still so exciting to come home to them every day.  🙂

img_0320Finnegan took a little while to warm up to us, but that was expected since he was feral.  Luckily, Felix helped encourage him to come out of his shell and play.  Sometimes Finn will shy away if you reach down to pet him, but other times he will jump up on the couch or the bed, look at me, and meow to be pet.  He’s a sweetheart and very well-behaved.img_0328

Felix has taken a liking to our computer chair.  Sometimes he will hop right up and settle in during the minute it takes Greg to get up and get a glass of water.  I love how friendly he is.  He always waits on the stairs to say good-bye when we leave for work in the mornings and he runs down to say hello the minute I get home.

Finnegan has such big feet and skinny legs!

Felix LOVES to play!  He also loves to lick things – his toys, the blinds, my hair when I’m trying to sleep.  Sometimes he will crawl up to our pillows in the middle of the night and start licking our hair.  I’m not sure if he wants to play at 4am or just wants to help me get a start on my shower, but we decided to spray him with water to get him to stop.  I felt bad spraying him, but after a few nights I realized it was worth it to be able to get back to sleep and he would forgive me the next day.

Finnegan also loves to play!  They are really great at playing together as well.  We are really thankful that they have each other to chase and wrestle with while they are home alone during the day.

You can also see the shoelace on the floor in this picture.  It’s one of their favorite toys!  They go crazy grabbing at it when we play with them and sometimes they play with it by themselves.  There have been times when one cat will pick it up on one end and take off running while the other chases after them.

Their latest favorite toy is a cough drop (still in the wrapper).  One night, Felix found one in Greg’s computer bag and they were batting it around on the hardwood floors and running so fast that they would crash into the bathroom door.  I woke up to the noise and thought they had somehow found a pebble to play with but discovered it was just a cough drop.  They LOVE the cough drop.  The dribble it down the hallway like a hockey puck and shoot it under the bathroom door and run around to the other side to send it back.  They even carry it around in their mouth and chase each other.  Maybe they also like the honey lemon smell?

Before we got our cats, we imagined them spending time on this windowsill, watching the birds in the tree.  It makes me smile to see them there now.

I think Felix’s favorite parts of the day are when I wake up, when we come home, and when they get treats.  This is him laying on my legs and waiting for me to get up.  Look at those beady little eyes.

They’ve started to find their favorite places to sleep.  Felix likes the back of the couch and Finnegan decided to claim the spot right below.

When we first adopted them, the lady gave us a whole bag full of the treats that help clean their teeth.  Finn liked them but Felix wasn’t interested.  We keep a bag on top of the fridge and give them a couple every so often.  Felix eventually figured out that the treats were delicious and now every time we go into the kitchen he’s there wondering if it’s treat time.

This is how Finn watches the birds sometimes.  His whole body is on my bedside table and his front paws rest on the windowsill.  You can see the little spray bottle on the right that I use to spray Felix if he tries to wake me up at 3am…

These two act like brothers and they have become an important part of our family.  If Finn is cuddling by my feet on the couch and Felix walks by, they make little buzzing meows to communicate and then walk into the bathroom together to get a bite to eat.  They are best buddies.  They have different personalities but they are both good-natured with big hearts.  Thanks for being such good kitties!

Thanks for reading!
