The Hunt
I step out into the cool fresh air.
It’s overcast, just after a rain.
My subjects will be covered in dew; it’s the perfect time for a hunt.
I sling my strap across my back like a longbow or a rifle,
But I won’t be shooting to kill.
I spot my first target:
A tall bush with fresh white flowers.
They so innocently bloomed yesterday, unaware that it will snow tomorrow.
I must catch them now before they lose their purity, before they shrivel from the frost and turn rusty brown.
I step off the path into the wet grass and retrieve my weapon.
Removing the cap, I slide the lens to my eye and adjust my settings to account for the cloud cover.
There is a slight breeze; focusing will be a challenge today.
I wait for a gust to pass and quickly focus on my prey.
Breathing out slowly, I stay still.
Time slows down and I watch for the right moment.
Stay focused.
Don’t move.
Pull the trigger.

I hope you enjoyed my poem and photos! I often like to compare photography with target practice. In both instances, you need to focus, aim, and shoot!
Thanks for reading!
