Today I answered the fifth question in this series: “Who is your favorite character?”
5. Who is your favorite character? Why?
My answer to this one is as easy as it is cliché – my favorite character in the Harry Potter books is Harry James Potter himself. If you’ve read my first post about which book was my favorite, you will know that I unashamedly consider Harry a friend. (Yes, a fictional character. Don’t judge me!) I’m sure this closeness that I feel comes from the fact that the book is written with the narrator following his thought process. Seven books is a long time to spend in the head of one character, especially one that was around my age at the time of each book’s release.
A lot of people make fun of how incompetent Harry can be sometimes and that he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what he did without massive amounts of luck and help from his friends. While this is true, I don’t think it makes him any less of a hero. Nobody is perfect, and I believe a hero can have flaws. He probably should have spent more time studying while he was at Hogwarts, but to be fair, he had a lot on his mind being the Chosen One and all! Sure, he may have done some irrational things, like run off to rescue Sirius by breaking in to the Ministry of Magic with a few of his friends, but anything crazy he did was done out of love for others which I find admirable.
Coming in as my second favorite character is Professor Remus Lupin. He was a great man and an excellent teacher. Rowling wrote him so well, I feel like I may have actually known him, or someone like him! He was wise, patient, and approachable. I know that Harry saw Sirius as his closest father figure, being that he was his god-father, but I feel like Harry received the best advice when it was coming from Lupin. He was flawed as well, he considered abandoning his wife and newborn son at one point, but he only did that because he was worried that his status as a werewolf would ruin their lives. In the end, he learned to accept their love and turned his attention back to the fight for the greater good.
